    Tomb of Malik Ayyaz

    Tomb of Malik Ayyaz

Malik Ayyaz was the favorite and trusted General of Mahmud of Ghazni. He was a slave from Georgia who rose to the rank of officer and general in the army of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni.

Malik Ayaz's fondness of Mahmud inspired poems and stories, mistakenly considered same-sex relationship while local Muslim historians and Sufis commemorate Malik Ayaz due to his unwavering feudalistic loyalty to Mahmud Ghaznavi.

He founded the present day Lahore after the defeat of Raja Jai Pal at the hands of Muhmud. Ayyaz was appointed as the Governor of Lahore in 1042 AD and the reconstruction of Lahore took place by his orders. His tomb today stands in the midst of Lahore’s Waleed City, inside Shah Almi Gate.
