Zebunnisa was the talented and learned daughter of Aurangzeb. She was a great poetess and wrote under the pen name of “Makhfi”. Addressing the waterfall in the shalimar Garden,

she sang:

“O water why are you lamenting,
And what grief wrinkles your face?
What was your pain, that all through the night,
You were striking youe head on the roocks and crying.”

Zebunnisa built a garden at Nawankot where she was buried after her death in 1669 AD. Her tomb was once furnished with precious stones, pavilions and fountains. The remains of her extensive gargen still exist with its certral gateway and two corner towers.

WHEN TO GO

October to April is the best time to visit Lahore. It is only 217 meters above sea level, so it is hotter than Islamabad, and can get very hot in summer.

HOW TO REACH

Lahore is connected by air, rail and road to the other cities of Pakistan, the airport is some five kilometres (three miles) out of the city centre. It is 292.9 kilometres (182 miles) from Islamabad on the Grand Trunk Road (Nation Highway G.T. Road) and 382.6 kilometres (287.7 miles) from Islamabad on the Motorway/AH1 (4 hrs 3 min) a driver of 4 to 6 hours or a train journey of 5 to 8 hours. The Indian border is 29 kilometres (18 miles) from Lahore along the Grand Trunk Road going east, but it is open only twice a month to foreigners, owing to Sikh unrest in the Indian Punjab.
