    Inferno: Wildfire guts 90 shops in AJK market

    MUZAFFARABAD (AwesomePakistan.Net): Around 90 shops were gutted as a fire engulfed the main market in Leepa Valley of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) early on Monday.

    Located some 82 kilometres north of Muzaffarabad, a fire erupted in the market at around 1am.

    As most structures in the market are made of wood, the fire spread quickly and engulfed the marketplace and nearby houses and vehicles.


    Wildfire in AJK destroys entire market

    MUZAFFARABAD (AwesomePakistan.Net): More than 90 shops were gutted Sunday night as a wildfire engulfed Leepa Valley market some 82 kilometers from the capital city of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

    A wildfire engulfed the market around 1:00am. Ninety shops, seven residential houses, seven vehicles and one government food depot containing 1,400 bags of wheat and flour were burnt to ashes in the wildfire.


    Murree-Galiyat road unusable due to heavy snow

    Murree-Galiyat (AwesomePakistan.Net): The Murree-Galiyat Road remained slippery and unusable for motorists for the Galiyat second consecutive day as snowfall continued in the area. Owing to the inclement weather conditions, the GDA has cautioned tourists to avoid unnecessary travel to Galiyat as the fog has considerably reduced visibility.

    Life has become paralysed in Galiyat in the aftermath of heavy snowfall on Wednesday.

    The main artery of the Murree-Galiyat road has become unusable as the road has become slippery, forcing motorists to either use tyre chains or stay indoors.


    Landslides suspend traffic on KKH

    Karakoram (AwesomePakistan.Net) Traffic on the Karakoram Highway (KKH) between Gilgit and Rawalpindi has been suspended as a result of landslides at multiple locations. The landslides were caused by torrential rains over the last 48 hours.

    According to the Frontier Works Organization, heavy landslides have blocked the road at Lal Pari near Gilgit, Kiyal , Dasu and Barsin in Pattan.

    Meanwhile, two cars have come under a landslide near Dasu, Kohistan. The cars have been severely damaged; however,


    Stranded snow leopard rescued in Naltar

    GILGIT (AawesomePakistan.Net): Five men trekked four several hours through heavy snow in Gilgit-Baltistan’s (G-B) Naltar valley to rescue a captive snow leopard, officials and rescuers said on Saturday.

    The leopard, who has been in the custody of wildlife conservationists ever since it was a cub who had gotten separated from its mother nearly three years ago, had recently been shifted from Dhee in Khunjerab to a remote section of Dishkir in Naltar.

    However, owing to the recent snowfall, access to the area was cut off.

Owing to the inclement weather conditions, the GDA has cautioned tourists to avoid unnecessary travel to Galiyat as the fog has considerably reduced visibility.

    Heavy snow disrupts life in Galiyat, G-B

    ABBOTTABAD/GILGIT (AwesomePakistan.Net): Life in the majestic Galiyat valley once again came to a standstill following heavy snowfall in the region, while the Abbottabad-Murree Road, which is the main artery linking tourist points with Abbottabad, was completely blocked. Other link roads were already buried since the first snowfall of winter, paralysing life in the picturesque valley, local residents and the police told The Express Tribune on Wednesday.

    “There is a complete shutdown in the Galiyat valley following heavy snow”, told Galiyat DSP Jameeur Rehman told The Express Tribune.


    Snowfall continues in upper parts of Pakistan

    FIS approves Malam Jabba, Naltar for 16 international ski races

    GILGIT (AwesomePakistan.Net): The International Ski Federation (FIS) has approved 16 international races for Pakistan, giving the sport a much-awaited boost.

    The facility means more international skiers will visit Pakistan to benefit from Pakistani ski slopes of international standard.

    According to information gathered by The Express Tribune, Pakistan Ski Federation (PSF) after sending two skiers – Muhammad Abbas and Mohammad Karim to Canada Olympics and Sochi (Russia) Winter Olympics in 2010 and 2014, respectively – tried hard to get international status with FIS races for its ski slopes.


    Winter Season: Temperatures drop in G-B

    Gilgit-Baltistan (AwesomePakistan.Net) (G-B) is still under the grip of severe cold weather conditions as the temperature dropped further, according to Radio Pakistan. According to the G-B Met office, the weather today remained the coldest since the winter season started as eight degrees centigrade was recorded. The minimum temperatures in other areas include Skardu which is minus seven degrees centigrade, while Gupis and Gilgit are minus five degrees centigrade. It is forecasted that there will be partly cloudy weather during the next 24 hours.
